Slow Cooker Beef on a Bun

Tangy-sweet pulled beef on a bun is easy to make and great for serving a crowd; it makes a large batch, but leftovers freeze very well.

Slow Cooker Beef on a Bun

  • canola or other mild vegetable oil, for cooking
  • 3 - 4 lb Only Alberta Beef beef blade, or other pot roast
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 onion, halved and thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups beef stock
  • 1 1/2 cups barbecue sauce, plus extra to taste
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tbsp grainy mustard
  • soft hamburger buns, for serving

How to Make It

  1. In a heavy skillet, heat a drizzle of oil over medium-high heat and brown the roast on all sides, seasoning it with salt and pepper.
  2. Place the onions in the bottom of a slow cooker and set the beef on top.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients, cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
  4. Pull the meat apart with two forks, tossing with the juices in the bottom of the slow cooker.
  5. Add extra barbecue sauce to taste, and serve on soft buns.
