“Protein is essential and many people are deficient in it, in which case we will advise them to supplement,” explains Tina Szenasi, Natural Choice Advisor at Calgary Co-op. “It is important for maintaining muscle mass, repairing after workouts and for immune system function.”
Whey protein comes from the liquid that is produced when milk turns into cheese and is super easy for our body to absorb as well as having innumerable health benefits. It has been known to promote muscle growth, reduce inflammation and lower blood pressure. For athletes or anyone looking to lose weight, it is a high-quality source of protein that helps you stay fuller for longer and keeps your muscles healthy and lean.
Some are looking to add more protein to their diets or to replace a meal, usually breakfast.
“The type of protein the customer chooses is normally a preference or dietary concern. Vegans and lactose intolerant customers would choose a plant protein over whey, which is from milk,” Szenasi says. “For a true meal replacement, we have both whey and plant-based options. Our whey-based powders include brands like Kaizen, Prairie Naturals and PVL.”
What are the benefits of Green Powders?
Greens powders may include vegetables or sea or water vegetation like algae.
Algae powders such as chlorella and spirulina are known for their bright green hue and awesome benefits to our overall health. Available as a powder or a supplement, these nutrient-dense superfoods are teeming with vitamins A, B, C and E as well as minerals such as magnesium, calcium, selenium and zinc.
In fact, spirulina is said to contain small amounts of almost every single mineral your body requires and, gram for gram, is among the most nutritious foods on the planet. What about ‘superfood’ supplements?
If you want to introduce more antioxidants into your diet, look no further than a superfood supplement. Açai, a superfruit from the rainforests of Central and South America, has three times as many antioxidants as blueberries and helps protect our cells as well as reducing bad cholesterol in the body.
Camu Camu is another really good antioxidant. It’s a sour berry originating from the Peruvian rainforest. It is the extremely high in vitamin C and contains far more than even a fresh medium orange.
