Make It Tonight: Fresh Instore Made Burgers

We typically use these fresh, premade hamburger patties to make one thing and one thing only—you guessed it, hamburgers—there are actually lots of different meals that can be whipped up using this surprisingly versatile and tasty staple. Whether you’re just looking for some different recipes or you bought a few too many hamburgers for a BBQ and are wondering what to do with them, we’ve got some ideas for those patties.  For starters, you can swap plain patties for some added flavour. Calgary Co-op’s Meat department is mixing up some fun new flavours of burger that would be great on its own, on the BBQ, or worked into one of our easy breakfast, lunch or dinner ideas below. Nordic-style Open-faced Hamburger Sandwich

Traditional Nordic smørrebrød are typically made with rye bread, remoulade (a mayo-based condiment similar to tartar sauce), greens and some sort of protein; usually smoked salmon or roast beef. Why not riff on the original recipe and swap out the roast beef for a leftover hamburger patty? Simply spread a generous layer of butter onto some dense rye bread and layer greens on top before adding your patty along with remoulade (if you don’t feel like making it you can just use garlic mayo or tartar sauce instead), some caramelized onions and any kind of pickle you like. This light, chic meal has lots of Nordic flair and won’t feel like a leftover meal at all. 

Breakfast Bun

Who says you can’t have hamburgers for breakfast? Try breakfast burgers on the go! This couldn’t be simpler to make and is a real treat for a Sunday morning. Choose your favourite breakfast bread; English muffin, brioche or even a burger bun, toast it and slather with mayo or ketchup. Then, heat up your patty on a hot skillet (add a slice of cheese for the last minute of cooking if you like), top with pre-cooked bacon, an egg and some tomatoes and pile everything up onto your bread. Not feeling the cheese? Add some smashed avocado or go a step further and add a pre-baked or fried hash brown patty if you’re feeling particularly indulgent!

Hamburger Mac ‘n’ Cheese

Hamburger patties and cheese are a match made in heaven, that’s why we have the cheeseburger, right? In this recipe, you’ll be switching up the carbs by swapping bread for pasta in this mishmash of two classic recipes! You’ll want to fry your patty in advance for this one, then let it cool and crumble it into your uncooked mac ‘n’ cheese before putting it in the oven.— or just crumble it into something as simple as good ol’ KD. You can mix this up a little, too: use our Irish Stout Beef & Cheddar patty, or add some chopped bell pepper and jalapeños for a Tex Mex feel; add cooked bacon and a swirl of French mustard for a more sophisticated dish, or sprinkle on some garlic breadcrumbs in the last 5-10 minutes of cooking for a crispy, crunchy topping.

Hamburger Pizza Pie

Is your family looking to cut down on carbs but still wants that delicious hamburger taste? You can make bun-less burgers, of course, and serve your patties with big lettuce leaves instead of buns, but we’ve got a feeling the kids might enjoy a hamburger pie a little bit more. For this one, you’ll need some pizza sauce, which you can either buy in the grocery store or make yourself by cooking fresh tomatoes, canned tomatoes or tomato passata in the skillet with garlic and oregano. Spread the pizza sauce over the bottom of a casserole dish before adding the cooked hamburger patties and coating with a generous sprinkling of melty cheese such as mozzarella or Monterey Jack. Make it a little healthier by adding some vegetables in between the patties and the cheese - we love mushrooms or bell peppers.

Burgers are great but there’s so much more to be done with beef patties! We hope we’ve managed to spark some inspiration with these surprising meal ideas for fresh or flavoured premade hamburger patties.

Irish Stout Beef & Cheddar Burgers

Ingredients:

4 Calgary Co-op Irish Stout and Cheddar burger patties
4 BFTW brioche buns
1 package French’s Crunchy Onion Toppers
1 bag Cal & Gary’s BBQ chips

Irish Stout Burger blogGuinness Cheese Sauce:
3 tbsp unsalted butter
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
1/2 cup whole milk
½ cup Guinness beer
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp French mustard
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp paprika
6 slices white cheddar slices

Purple Coleslaw:
2 cups thinly sliced red cabbage
1 large carrot (shredded)
2 limes (juiced and zested)
1/3 cup mayonnaise
Salt and pepper to taste 

Dijonnaise Sauce:
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tbsp grainy Dijon mustard
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp lemon juice

Directions:

1. Preheat grill on medium high heat.
2. Purple Coleslaw: Mix your thinly sliced red cabbage with carrots, lime juice and mayonnaise. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let sit covered in fridge until ready for use.
3. Guinness Cheese Sauce: Start by melting butter in a medium saucepan. Once butter is melted, add in flour and cook for five minutes to remove raw flour taste. Slowly whisk in milk and beer. Once sauce starts to thicken add in the rest of your ingredients and whisk until smooth. Keep warm on low heat until ready to use, whisking once in a while.
4. Dijonnaise Sauce: Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and reserve.
5. Once all your sauces and slaw are ready, grill burgers approximately 2-3 minutes per side for a medium-rare burger, or until 160°F for well done.
6. Toast buns on grill for 1 minute until you get grill marks.
7. To assemble spread Dijonnaisse on top and bottom bun. Place your burger patty down then add a dollop of Guinness cheese sauce on top. Top with slaw and crispy onions. and serve with a side of Cal & Gary’s BBQ Chips.
