Asymptomatic COVID Testing

Pharmacy covid panelNOTE: The Chief Medical Officer of Health announced that effective immediately, there will be a pause on all asymptomatic
testing conducted by AHS and community pharmacies until further notice. As the number of active cases and the number of symptomatic tests rises, this is a strategic move to reduce testing wait times, get timely results to Albertans and limit the spread.

Testing is currently offered at 7 locations:  Village Square, Montrose (High River), Macleod Trail, Richmond Road, Hampton, Airdrie  and Strathmore.

Only patients who are asymptomatic and who have no known exposures to COVID-19 will be able to be tested at the pharmacy. Patients who display any symptoms of COVID-19 infections or who may have been exposed due to travel, or close personal contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 MUST be referred for testing at an AHS Assessment Center by calling 811.

  • The COVID-19 test detects if the virus is in your mouth.
  • As long as you remain asymptomatic, you do not need to self-isolate while you are waiting for your result.
  • Tests for COVID-19 can only detect the virus at the time of the swab collection and provide only a point in time result. If your test result is negative, you may still go on to develop COVID-19 if you have been exposed in the last 14 days

In order to reduce testing wait times, speed up access to results and support Albertans during influenza season and the winter months Alberta Health currently recommends asymptomatic testing at the pharmacy for Albertans who fall into the following categories:

• School teachers and/or school staff
• Healthcare workers
• Staff and/or residents at congregate living facilities, including long-term care
• Albertans experiencing homelessness

Asymptomatic testing will be offered to additional groups if required.

Please complete the AHS On-line Assessment to confirm that you qualify for asymptomatic testing.

On the day of your Appointment:

  • Bring your Alberta Health Card (Only Alberta Residents with a valid Alberta Health Care card qualify for testing at the pharmacy)
  • Wear a mask to your appointment

How long will it take to receive my results?
Results notification typically takes 3-4 business days, but may vary based on volume of testing across the province. Albertans who are registered for the MyAlberta portal may look up the results of their test for themselves.
